A New Way to Celebrate Indie Author Day…. Get to Know IBPA!
This year, the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA – ibpa-online.org) celebrates its 34th year of empowering independent voices in publishing. IBPA’s mission is to lead and serve the independent publishing community through advocacy, education, and tools for success. It makes sense, then, that IBPA would be a founding and continuing sponsor of Indie Author Day. We believe in indie authors…we have all along.
You’ll notice I didn’t write ‘self-published authors,’ but rather ‘indie authors.’ This is because the term ‘self-publishing’ holds within it the misleading idea that one can do everything on their own. And while there may be that rare genius who truly can write, edit, design, format, market, and sell a book by themselves, I’ve certainly never met him or her. The truth is, publishing is a team sport. We all need a team that includes, among other things, a professional designer, cover artist, editor, and copy editor. As the saying goes, unless someone else would pay you good money to design their book cover, you shouldn’t be designing your own.
To this end, IBPA offers tools for success, including educational and cooperative marketing programs. From showcasing members’ books at the American Library Association Annual Conference, BookExpo, and the Frankfurt Book Fair, to educating hundreds of members each month through our Publishing University Online webinar program, to advocating on behalf of indie publishers in response to Amazon.com’s buy button switch, IBPA promotes a world in which every independent publisher has the tools and knowledge to professionally engage in all aspects of the publishing industry. We’re here to help.
So, let’s celebrate Indie Author Day together.
If you’re a librarian, IBPA can be a resource for patrons interested in publishing their own work as well as a resource for building a library collection that includes independent voices.
If you’re an indie author, IBPA can help you understand the sometimes complicated book publishing industry. And that’s something to celebrate!
